Stayed at: Ballarat Goldfields Holiday Park
Ballarat is Victoria’s third largest city, located just over an hour west of Melbourne. Ballarat has enjoyed a rich and prosperous heritage thanks to the Gold Rush which began in 1851. The main tourist attraction in town is Sovereign Hill, a recreated gold township of the 1850s where you can experience life in that era.
We stayed at the Big 4 closest to Sovereign Hill, you can walk there or a short drive. Our site in the park was pretty tight, we were touching a tree at the back and overhanging the gutter, so do make sure they have your van site correct on your booking. We also walked from the park to Lake Esmond each afternoon, which was pretty at sunset.
We bought a 2 day pass for Sovereign Hill, as our little kids really could only last half a day and was good value. It was a great day out, we really enjoyed learning the gold history and seeing how old townships worked.
