Sovereign Hill is a living museum presenting the story of Ballarat as a goldrush boomtown. Gold was discovered here in 1851, triggering the greatest alluvial gold rush the world has ever known. The tourist attraction of Sovereign Hill covers 15 hectares of a former gold mining site, Sovereign Hill’s Outdoor Museum brings the gold rushes to life through a living township with diggings, underground mines, costumed characters, coach rides, demos in gold smelting and 1850s shops, trades, schools and dwellings.
We bought a 2 day pass for Sovereign Hill, as our little kids really could only last half a day and was good value. It was a great day out, we really enjoyed learning the gold history and seeing how old townships worked. Getting an Old Time photo is worth it too, they dress you up in a costume and you get a photo print in sepia tone style. We’ll have to do the coach ride next time when the kids are older.
